“Better to live a day as a lion than 100 years as a sheep.”
-Benito Mussolini, 1943

Mussolini knew how to use words and pictures to his advantage. As a young socialist he edited newspapers L'Avvenire del Lavoratore (The Future of the Worker) and later Lotta di Classe (The Class Struggle).

Mussolini’s journalistic experience helped him to become a master of propaganda.

He used information as a means of expanding his influence until he had virtual total control over Italian society.

Mussolini came to power through a coup d'état in October 1922 known as the “March on Rome”. The fascist leader saw himself as an emperor in the style of Julius Caesar and wanted to restore the greatness of the Roman Empire to the Italian peninsula.

He was eventually ousted by his own political party and executed by communist partisans. This Mussolini Photo Gallery features Mussolini pictures from throughout “il Duce’s” career. If you would like to learn more about Mussolini’s life, please see the Mussolini Biography here.
